This is a World War II era German Messerschmitt Me-262 painted as a Japanese Nakajima Kikka, Japan's first jet-powered fighter. While the Kikka did not look exactly like the ME-262, they were similar enough in appearance and performance to inspire me to create this repaint. And it's fun to fly!

************** HISTORY **************

The Kikka ("Orange Blossom") was a twinjet fighter manufactured by the Nakajima Airplane Company. It was the only Japanese jet-powered aircraft produced during World War II that was capable of taking off under its own power, although it did so only twice. The Kikka design was based on the successful German Me-262 jet-powered fighter, though so far as I can determine there was no collaboration between the Japanese and Germans on its development.

While at first glance the Kikka was very similar to the Me-262, it was in reality somewhat smaller than its German counterpart and not as powerful. Also, in marked contrast to the Me-262's sleek, shark-like form, the Kikka's fuselage had an elongated "boxy" appearance.

The first Kikka was completed in August 1945, and made its maiden flight on August 7 (one day after the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima). The second flight, which took place four days later, had to be aborted during takeoff. The subsequent Japanese surrender brought an immediate termination to the project. At the time of termination, a second prototype was almost ready for flight trials and 18 additional prototypes and pre-production aircraft were in various stages of assembly.

Fighter, trainer, reconnaissance, and attack versions of the Kikka were planned. The bomber version was to be unarmed, but the fighter version was to carry a pair of 30-mm cannon.
